Most people know they should see the dentist regularly, but how often is “regularly”? For many patients, the answer is every six months. However, the right schedule depends on your oral health, your risk for certain dental problems, and your age. Here’s what to know.
Why Professional Cleanings Matter
Even with excellent brushing and flossing, plaque can harden into tartar, especially along the gumline and between teeth. Once tartar forms, it can only be removed with professional tools. Left in place, it irritates the gums and can lead to gum disease, cavities, and bad breath. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlights regular dental care as one of the most effective ways to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
Every Six Months: The Standard for Most Patients
For patients with healthy teeth and gums, a cleaning and exam twice a year is usually enough to remove buildup and catch problems early. During each visit, we clean your teeth, check for decay and gum inflammation, and perform an oral cancer screening.
When You May Need Cleanings More Often
Some patients benefit from visits every three to four months, including those who:
- Have been treated for gum disease and need periodontal maintenance
- Smoke or use tobacco products
- Have diabetes or another condition that affects gum health
- Are pregnant, since hormonal changes can increase gum inflammation
- Get cavities frequently or have dry mouth
- Wear braces or other appliances that trap plaque
The American Academy of Periodontology notes that people with a history of gum disease often need more frequent professional care to keep the infection under control.
Cleanings for Children
Children should have their first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing. After that, most children do well with checkups every six months. Our children’s oral health exams and preventive dentistry help kids build healthy habits, and sealants add extra protection against cavities.
What Happens During a Cleaning?
Your visit usually includes removal of plaque and tartar, polishing to remove surface stains, flossing, and a thorough exam. We may take digital X-rays to look for problems between teeth and below the gumline, and our intraoral camera lets you see what we see. A cleaning can also brighten your smile by removing surface stains.
Is It Time for Your Next Cleaning?
